The Texas League of Conservation Voters (TLCV), a coalition of Texans committed to clean air, clean water, and access to public lands, water, fish and wildlife, today endorsed Eddie Saenz for the Texas House, saying that “his commitment to improving the environment for South Texas families is a breath of fresh air.”
“As a father and a small businessman, Eddie Saenz understands that protecting the natural environment is good for families and good for business,” said TLCV’s executive director, Colin Leyden.
Saenz’ opponent had one of the worst records on environmental issues of any Democrat in the Texas House — including a critical vote against protecting children from toxic fumes and diesel emissions inside old school buses. He was one of only three South Texas Democrats to vote against the common-sense proposal, which would have provided funds to clean up the school buses.
“Children in the Rio Grande Valley don’t have the luxury of waiting for a state representative who will put them first and his special-interest campaign contributors last,” Leyden said. “This election is their parents’ chance to make a positive change.”
SOUTH TEXAS COMMUNITIES UNITE BEHIND EDDIE!
From public health to public schools to public transportation, the leaders of every community in District 40 have endorsed Eddie’s ability to help them get the job done in Austin.
“Our community has suffered from not having a full partner in Austin,” says La Joya council member Mary Salinas. “Eddie Saenz will be that partner for La Joya and all the communities of our district.”
Eddie’s supporters include Edinburg Mayor Joe Ochoa, Edcouch Mayor Calin Guzman, Elsa Mayor Senovio Castillo, La Joya Mayor Billy Leo, and La Villa Mayor Rene Castillo, as well as a majority of the area’s city council and school board members.
AARON PENA CAUGHT WITH HAND IN CRADDICK COOKIE JAR!
A defunct political action committee was revived in Austin this week to funnel Republican cash to so-called Democrats struggling to survive their own primaries — including Aaron Peña, who immediately told the media he will use the money to attack Eddie.
The campaign cash Peña pocketed came directly from Bob Perry, the single-largest contributor to the Republican Party of Texas and the man who funded the Swift Boat Veterans For Truth attacks against Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry in 2004. The other two funders of the revived PAC are James Mansour, one of the state’s strongest supporters of private school vouchers, and Michael Stevens, a major Republican donor in Houston.
And, of course, from Republican House Speaker Tom Craddick — the man whose nomination was seconded by Peña even though he helped strip 500,000 eligible children of their health benefits, allowed electric rates to soar by an average 56 percent, and pushed through a racist voter I.D. Bill that Peña failed to stand up against.
